B2 loves bags!

After B1's class at United Square,we went over to Novena Square to watch Ice skating competition there and Magic competition at Square 2.

The second contestant at the magic show was slow and boring...just made us didn't want to continue watching the competition at all.

Went to Hb's niece shop at Square 2. B2 shows how much she loves bags again. Busy trying on the bags and refuse to let go.

Nows Siss sells not just leather handbags and accessories, they sell wallets and other small leather goods, bag charms and even lovely pens.

When I was there with B2, lady boss was still upset over a nice little card holder worth $169 stolen by a woman today.

Expecting Number 4...

Not me....of course!

My neighbour is expecting No.4...accident again! At least this one she didn't mention abortion at all, unlike the No.3, who's also "accident". Her No.2's also quite unexpected, but at least there is no question of "to keep or not".

She has just stopped hiring maid since early this year, guess she'll have to start everything all over again!

PSLE results,SVPS...

Hb's niece got her PSLE results today- 4As,T score 229...not good enough to get into River Valley High which she has aimed for.

2 of the Top students are from SVPS, with score of 286!

Mont Blanc Laundry Disaster

What's your worst laundry disaster? Color run from red top, blue jeans? Tissue papers in pant's pocket left all clothes stuck with white bits and pieces?

I experienced something new today.

Very Cautioned me always separate laundry into dark and light colored batch, delicate and normal wash, checked hb's and B1's pockets for tissue papers and coins...

I've never expected Hb's Mont Blanc pen's still in his business pocket!

The pen survived 1st load of heavy duty, cotton cycle.Without me noticing its existence and luckily didn't stain hb's business shirts, and B1's light colored clothes.

The second load of B2's nappy, towel, blankets were so lucky. The pen can't withstand the heavy-duty,cotton cycle anymore. Fell apart and stain the laundry and laundry net.

Worst of all is the pen's falling apart, and the cap couldn't be found???!!! The pen has been with Hb for more than a decade.

B2's 3rd trip to Zoo

Brought B1 and B2 to Zoo in late afternoon today.

Only managed to catch the 5pm Sea Lion show, walked around to see some animals and had dinner at KFC.

Brought along porridge for B2 to eat at KFC, while feeding her, notice that a tourist was snapping photos at B2.Whispered to B1 about it,and after B1 turned to look the tourist, then she started to ask for permission to take B2's photo.

While eating at KFC, I killed one big mosquito with my coin pouch, asked the Mainland Chinese service staff to help "get rid" of the baby cockroach that has been crawling around the short partition next to our table...

Julia Gabriel's Mini Open House

It's last lesson for the term for B1's classes at Julia Gabriel.

Usually there is a small "Open House" for the last lesson, where parents are invited to sit in

We have switched B1 from her Edudrama to Readers and Writers class, probably temporary though.

This time round ,they have combined "performances" with two other classes. There are dramas and poems reciting.

We brought B2 to give Jie Jie support. B2 got too excited in class, kept calling Jie Jie, and wanted to walk around the class.

Kids' wear in Hong Kong-Fables AZ

One of my MUST-VIST stores in Hong Kong. I used to buy from the branch at Times Square. But last year I found this branch at Windsor House, near where I usually stay when I travel to Hong Kong.

http://alexandraz.com/main/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=56&Itemid=102&lang=en

Use this Super VIP's number for discount: 800002284

I told the SA "frankly" that this is my friend's VIP number, and they are fine with me using it.

Not far from this store, is Dr Kong's branch, where I usually buy mary-jane and sandals for my elder daughter, and shoe insoles for myself and hb.

If you think I am super Cute...

"If you think I am super CUTE,you should look at my mum"

Would you buy clothes with such wordings for your kids?

I saw this at the dept.store, amused, just put it away, and told hb and B1 I would not buy such clothes to "embarass" myself.

Somehow, mysteriously,I found these two clothes yesterday, in a bag where I kept all B2's new clothes, all gifts from friends and relatives.

I didn't even know they exist. Must be Hb brought it back, most likely it's from his niece, and he didn't even tell/show me.

How to fix burn hole on water-resistant jacket?

B1's nice pink jacket has a tiny burnt hole, from incense stick while praying in Hong Kong Wong Tai Sin Temple.

I bought these iron-on stuff from Daiso, trying to fix the hole. The problem is, the jacket's made of nylon material with cotton inner lining. The hole is only on the nylon layer, so I couldn't use the method stated in that "patching double-sided cloth",and I am not sure if the nylon material can withstand the heat from iron when I iron-on the stickers?

I am thinking of placing small piece of cotton cloth on the hole(from front),then the double-sided patching cloth, than the stickers.Iron them on with a piece of cloth on top to protect the nylon material. Not sure it that works?!

MM Lee Kuan Yew wants learning of Chinese to be fun

I am still not sure if the current modular system of learning Chinese really works. I am pretty sure it's still better than years ago...when my nephews were sent to Australia since Sec schools as they are just too weak in their Chinese.

B1's school set a very high standard for their Chinese. Students need to get about 90-92 marks in order to opt for Higher Chinese.

Her papers and Ting1 Xie2 lists are also more difficult than a lot of other schools. Even her teacher at enrichment class commented that it's more difficult that Nan Yang Primary's Chinese papers.

I do agree that Mo Xie could kill the interest of learning Chinese, but I think it's still important to continue with Ting Xie. Just make it less stressful and probably less words each time.

I also don't like the current system of heavy reliance on Han Yu Pin Yin. Kids don't even bother to try to recognise the Chinese words when there is Han Yu Pin Yin. If they are given a book without Han Yu Pin Yin,they are totally not interest to read it.

Explaining the words in English is of great help to most children from English-Speaking homes.Even her Chinese enrichment classes are doing that.

Most important thing is of course, how to make learning more fun? Through games, drama, riddles, jokes, songs.Holiday workshops incorporating all these should help.

My daughter is stilll struggling with Chinese.Mainly our fault I think...we didn't speak enough Mandarin to her when she's growing up, didn't read enough Chinese story books to/with her. As she attended school, the "big" environment make it even more difficult for her to have any interest in Chinese. Everyone around her speaks English, she rarely have any chance to speak Mandarin, other than during Chinese lessons.

Luckily, our Malaysian neigbours who are not very fluent in English moved in a few years ago. That has forced B1 to learn to communicate with them in Mandarin. Though she did pick up some Malaysian accent.

We wanted to learn from mistakes. We'll try to speak more Mandarin to B2.When teaching her new vocabs, we say it in both English and Chinese. Sing more Chinese songs to her.Get B1 to read Chinese books to B2....

MM Lee wants learning of Chinese to be fun
by Clarissa Oon & Cai Haoxiang

CHINESE language teachers should pull out all the stops to make learning the mother tongue fun for children, a rising number of whom are not speaking it at home, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said last night.

They should also teach listening and conversation skills first, rather than the reading and writing of Chinese characters which could potentially turn off young Chinese Singaporeans from the language, he added.

MM LEE ON...

Learning right

'Any language in the world begins with speaking
and listening. We started the wrong way. We
insisted on ting xie (writing words as dictated),
mo xie (writing entire passages from memory).
Madness! Parents spent a lot of time and money,
extra tuition on their children, but (children had)
no interest, they were burnt out.

Reflecting on some 40 years of bilingual education in an off-the-cuff speech at the official opening of a Chinese language centre, he said Singapore's policy on the learning of Chinese started on the wrong footing because he believed in the past that it was possible to master two languages equally well.

As a result, Chinese lessons in the old days were pitched at too difficult a level and 'successive generations of students paid a heavy price because of my ignorance', he said.

He was addressing an audience of 250 policymakers, academics and educators at the opening of the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL).

'I wasn't helped by Ministry of Education (MOE) officials. They were basically two groups of people, one English-speaking, the other Chinese-teaching,' he quipped.

Chinese teachers in the 1960s and 1970s were Chinese-educated purists who emphasised character-writing and dictation in the teaching of Chinese as a second language, which 'turned the students off completely', he recalled.

As Prime Minister, he intervened successively over the years to fine-tune Singapore's bilingual policy.

Eventually, MOE decided in 2004 to teach Mandarin through a modular system, allowing each child to go at his own pace.

The policy, he acknowledged with a laugh, is still 'not completely right but I will get it right if I live long enough'.

The SCCL, located at Ghim Moh Road, was set up by the MOE in February to train existing Chinese-language teachers and research how best to teach Chinese in a bilingual environment.

At its official opening last night, it signed agreements with four partner institutions to conduct joint research and offer degree and training programmes for teachers. Its partners are the Media Development Authority, SIM University, the University of Hong Kong and NTUC's Seed Institute.

Bilingualism has become a major concern of MM Lee's in recent years, amid fears that the Chinese language is losing currency. Latest MOE data show that 59 per cent of the Primary 1 cohort this year came from families that speak mainly English at home, compared to 49 per cent just five years ago and 10 per cent in 1982.

Earlier this month, in an interview carried in the People's Action Party magazine Petir, he cited bilingualism as the most difficult policy he had to implement, and the one which should have been done differently from the start.

This was because he did not realise that a child's intelligence and language ability were two different things, something which his daughter, a neurologist, confirmed late in his life.

Yesterday, he urged parents and educators not just to expose children to the Chinese language from a young age, but also to stimulate the child's interest in the language, beyond just 'passing exams'.

'I want to get this message into the heads of the younger generation of teachers: Use IT, use drama, use every method to capture the interest of children,' he said.

One example of how the SCCL is making the learning of Chinese fun is through mobile phone technology. This was shown at a conference yesterday afternoon by one of the centre's lecturers.

Dr Wong Lung Hsiang directed an experiment in which students used camera phones to take photos of anything they wanted to outside of class. They then uploaded their pictures onto the Internet, incorporating a Chinese idiom into the picture caption.

Their Chinese teacher then guided the class in a discussion on the accurate use of those idioms, which Dr Wong said works better than the direct correction of mistakes.

The conference on how to teach Chinese in an interesting and effective way was attended by more than 400 teachers and researchers from here and abroad.

The three-day conference ends tomorrow.

His children's mistake

'My children, they are totally bilingual. Their wives are also bilingual. But they made the mistake of speaking in English at home.

So (as a result) my grandchildren are not fluent (in Mandarin). They can speak it, but they don't like to speak it. I speak to them in Mandarin and they answer in English.

So my first advice to all parents is, if you can speak Mandarin, speak it to your children at home.'

B1 got her report book today.

The first thing she told me when she stepped into the house is "Mummy, I am staying in my class!"

Some of her classmates will be transferred out of her current class next year.So I guessed their school will continue to monitor the top 120 students in each level, and re-shuffle whenever their level positions fall out of their current class, even though from this year onwards, their school no longer states students' class and level positions in their report card.

B1 got Band 1 for all her subjects, even though Chinese is borderline Band 1.Based on marks, she's not able to take Higher Chinese, but probably because she still stays in her current class,so the school is giving her a chance to continue taking Higher Chinese.

Her aggregate and percentage only see very very minimal improvement, yet hb said she's going to get her reward...Nintendo DS! I am going to faint!

Dresses I like..

I hardly wear dresses since I became a homemaker. Now with B2, and that fact that I am still BFding her, I totally can forget about wearing nice dresses.

..but still...I love love these dresses...

It may work better for canvas sneakers, though I have yet to try it.

Bertina is 15 months old

Weight: 7kg+?

Height:74cm?

The Guess Denim overall that she's wearing is a1 yr old birthday for B1 (Yes B1!) from my dear good friends. I am glad that I didn't give this away!

She's able to say and understand: sit, eat, play, please (pease),walk, shoes, clothes, books, bag,"gai gai",nice, daddy, mummy, jie jie, uncle, aunty, and various body parts, nose, head, hair, eyes, ears, neck, chin, cheek, fingers, toes.

She would say Ni 你whenever we say Ai爱, or You whenever we say I love.

She has no problem pronouncing one syllable words, but some of the two-syllables words, she would only pronounce the last syllable, Water=ter, carry= ry,TV=V.

She's able to understand and follow instructions, like asking her to throw papers into the dustbin, look for TV controller, keep her toys etc.

Her favourite song is Ni Wa Wa 泥娃娃, which I usually play from You Tube on my notebook for her. Whenever hb and I take out our notebooks, she would start saying Wa Wa.

I didn't let her listen to much music when she's still in my womb, no tai1 jiao4,but she seems to like music and dance a lot.She would turn around or shake her body whenever she hears songs and keep hitting the piano keys whenever Jie Jie's practising her piano.

Whenever we said Gai Gai or Walk walk, she would head straight to the gate and get ready to put on her shoes.

Her most-used Chinese words must be Yao4 要and Hai2 Yao4還要 还要,used whenever she wants more milk/food.

At around 8mths, she learnt to clap her hands for milk,at 12mths, she used baby signs,Milk and More and said More More to ask for milk. Now at 15mths, she would say Pease (please),and starts pulling pillow,or bringing pillow to me,to ask for milk.

She started climbing sofa, stools and chairs when she's slightly passed 14 mths.Just 1 day after I told my aunt that she's not able to climb up chair yet!

And like her mummy and Jie Jie, she LOVES bags! She would Always hang bags around her neck, walk towards the gate, wave and say Bye Bye to us.
